Tips for Keeping Our Feathered Friends as Pets
Germany is known for its love of pets, and birds play a significant role in this. They are cherished not only for their vibrant colors and melodious songs, but also for their interesting personalities and the joy they bring to their owners. In this article, we’ll introduce you to the most popular birds kept as pets in Germany and provide insights into how to properly care for and keep them.
1. Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus)
Budgerigars are at the top of the popularity list. These small, lively birds are native to Australia and are very popular because of their friendly nature and their ability to mimic human speech.
After a short adjustment period, budgies quickly become tame and are particularly well-suited for households with children. Like most other bird species, budgies should be kept with other budgies. These birds are very social and feel most at home in the company of others. They also quickly seek contact with people.
A spacious cage with daily free-flight sessions, along with a balanced diet of parakeet seeds, fresh fruit, and vegetables, promotes good health.
2. Canaries (Serinus canaria domestica)
Canaries are known for their beautiful song and bright colors. Originally from the Canary Islands, they are a symbol of joy and liveliness in many German households.
Canaries tend to be calm and low-maintenance birds with a natural curiosity. After a short adjustment period, they quickly become tame, eating from your hand or perching on your arm.
This species of bird also enjoys living in a group and thrives in a cage that is large enough. Special canary food, combined with fresh fruits and vegetables, ensures healthy growth.
If you keep birds mainly for their beautiful singing, you should look for male canaries. They are said to be the better singers.
3. Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus)
Cockatiels, which are also native to Australia, are very popular because of their charming personalities and beautiful appearance. With their striking cheek patches and distinctive crest, they are easy to recognize.
Cockatiels are very sociable and enjoy interacting with their owners and other birds. They are considered particularly intelligent and are prized for their beautiful singing. However, this can also make them quite loud, so they benefit from a particularly large cage.
4. Zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata)
Zebra finches are small, lively birds known for their cheerfulchirping. Originally from Australia, they are easy to care for and are therefore well-suited for beginners in bird keeping.

Zebra finches are extremely easy to care for and feed on finch seed mixes, fresh fruit, and vegetables. They are also very social and should therefore be kept in pairs or small groups. Unlike canaries and budgerigars, these birds generally do not become tame.
5. Parrots (various species)
Parrots are known for their intelligence, their impressive range of colors, and their ability to mimic human speech. Popular parrot species in Germany include African grey parrots, Amazon parrots, and macaws.
Parrots need large aviaries and plenty of space to fly. They benefit from stimulating toys as well as interaction with people and other parrots. Parrots are very social animals and require a lot of attention.
They have a very varied diet. A balanced diet consisting of parrot food, fruits, vegetables, and nuts is important for the healthy development of this species.
Caring for and Keeping Pet Birds
Birds are fascinating and endearing pets that bring a lot of joy to German households. From lively budgies to sociable cockatiels and intelligent parrots—each species has its own unique needs and characteristics.
It is therefore important to thoroughly research the specific species before getting a bird and to ensure that you have the necessary resources and time to provide them with a happy and healthy life.
- Housing: Birds need a spacious cage and enough room to fly. In addition, they should be given the opportunity to fly freely outside the cage every day. This strengthens their muscles and stimulates circulation.
- Lighting: Ideally, a bird should be exposed to natural sunlight for about 2–3 hours a day. This enhances its well-being and promotes vitamin D production. Since this is rarely feasible in most households, a bird lamp designed to meet birds’ needs can be used, which mimics natural sunlight as closely as possible.
- Nutrition: A balanced diet is essential for birds' health. For most bird species, this consists of special seeds and grains, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, and nuts if necessary.
- Social Behavior: Birds are very social creatures that feel most comfortable in the company of other birds. It is therefore recommended to keep birds in pairs at a minimum, or better yet, in small groups.
Most pet birds living in Germany originally come from regions where they are exposed to plenty of light and natural sunlight every day. Providing species-appropriate lighting in the birdcage or aviary is crucial for the well-being of the birds in our homes and can lead to noticeable improvements in their singing, sleeping, and eating behaviors after just a few days.

Birds benefit greatly from artificial lighting when it is adjusted to their natural day-night rhythm using a special timer. In particular, bird species native to regions near the equator are accustomed to a consistent day-night rhythm. Their bodies are not adapted to short winter days or irregular lighting schedules. Controlling the amount of light using a digital timer ensures that the natural photoperiod is mimicked, making the birds appear more balanced and content.
No matter which type of bird you choose, bonding with a feathered friend can be an incredibly enriching experience. Birds not only bring color and music into our lives, but also a unique connection to nature.
